Death of a Salesman

Lyrics

Watching T.V.
I saw my future and it frightened me
Willie Loman
If I stay here that's the man I'll be
Got to make a change set me free

One day it's "great job"
"Way to go, my boy, you're doing fine"
Next thing you know it's
Give us twice as much in half the time
Sell your soul just to make a dime

What I want to say
There's got to be a better way
So I'll leave this place
Start my life today
So, goodbye to you
Willie Loman we are through
I'll just be myself
I don't want to live my life like you

Goodbye Willie
Hello to the man I'm supposed to be
Not a rich man
At least not so monetarily
You cannot put a price on being free

I don't want to lose myself like you
Always wanting more
Use possesions to keep score
In a game that no one wins

Miscellaneous Info

This is a true story. I was working for a couple of radio stations selling ad space (they called us "Marketing Consultants" but we were just salesmen) and, though I liked most of the people I worked with, I HATED the job. One night after a soul-sucking day at work, I turned on the T.V. and watched part of an old PBS stage production of "Death of a Salesman" (with Dustin Hoffman as Willie Loman). Shortly afterwards, I quit that job and started playing music again.

I haven't had a sales job since. No more suits and ties for me. In fact, I haven't really had to wear shoes to any job since then. To be quite honest, I'm completely nude right now. O.K., that part's not true. But the thing about the shoes is true.
