Uncharacteristic (It Must Be You)

Lyrics

The glass is half-full of poison
Murphy was naive
Now I'm starting to question
If that's what I believe

It's uncharacteristic
To be so optimistic
I cannot explain it
It must be you

I'm always finding the dark side
To every happy day
But lately it's getting harder
Since you've come my way

I guess everyone changes
But there's nothing as strange as
The way I'm behaving
It must be you

It's so blissful living in denial
Find no reasons not to smile
No explaining my change in attitude
It must be you

I'm always finding the dark side
To every happy day
I'm wearing rose-colored lenses
Since you've come my way

Miscellaneous Info

This is probably the oldest song on the CD. I believe I wrote the music back in 2000. I can remember playing the intro over and over and over in my old apartment in San Clemente and thinking that I must be driving the the neighbors nuts. The lyrics were written in early 2001 during a period when Shelly and I were hanging out but not yet dating. So, while it's mostly full of euphoric optimism it has a little dose of fear and pessimism, too. ("So blissful living in denial..")

Recording the guitar track for this one was one of the most frustrating days of my life. I couldn't get a the guitar sound I wanted and my playing detiorated with every take. To top things off, a car alarm went off down the street and NOBODY TURNED IT OFF. Finally, I went out and investigated myself and after dealing with a severely apathetic woman behind the desk of the convalescent home down the street (where the car was sitting with it's horn blaring nonstop) I managed to salvage the day and get it done.

I'm still not crazy about the guitar track but the horns sound nice, don't you think. (Oh, the irony...)
