When She Speaks

Lyrics

She's got me going again
Always seems to pull me in
Let's watch the logic
Pour through the cracks
She likes to think her laughter
Trumps all of the facts

When she speaks
She always has a way out
I can't seem to ever find my way 'round
When she speaks
She always has a way out

I'm finding out much too late
Somehow she managed to switch the bait
Just watch my forehead
Smash through the wall
While she maintains that somehow
She's above it all

So disconcerting that the jury's always hung
My arguments rejected
Long before they've left my tongue

Miscellaneous Info

This was the last song written for the CD. I went to the NAMM show in late January to visit my friend Alex Abravanel and to help him work the Tacoma Guitars booth. I left the show with two things: a little Olympia parlor guitar and a really bad cold. So, as I sat and strummed that little guitar while nursing my cold, I came up with most of this song. It sounded more like a Tom Waits song when I sang it with a cold, but turned out sounding more like my choirboy self once I got better.

I recorded a quick demo of this song the day before Mike Sessa did all of his drum parts. I thought if we had time I could have him put down a drum track to my rough tracks and then go back and record those parts over. We did have time but I ended up not using the drums afterall. I did fix the piano part and the vocals but kept everything else. I'm pretty sure you can hear Shelly making a cake in the background while I recorded the nylon string part.

Oh, and I should thank Keith Slettedahl from The 88 for leaving his nylon string guitar at my apartment for so long. It came in handy when I recorded this track. You can come pick it up now Keith.
