It's Like Cigarettes

Lyrics

You try to find some peace of mind
You're digging holes to fill with time
The answer's plain but salvation's such a climb

It's like cigarettes
What's your point? I don't know.
Nothing ever comes to rest
Until you let it go

The light has changed but here I stay
I'll make my leap some other day
I want to throw it all away sometimes

It's like cigarettes
There's no point - don't I know
Nothing ever comes to rest
Until you let it go
Don't you know nothing ever comes to rest
You have to let it go

Or you will find yourself
In someone else's hell
The sun is up it's later than you know

It's like cigarettes
There's no point when you know
Nothing ever comes to rest
Until you let it go
Don't you know nothing ever comes to rest
You have to let it go

Miscellaneous Info

This was written back in 2002 and was intended to be the title track for an independent movie that a friend of Shelly's was making (and that Shelly had played a part in). Well, for some reason the movie never got finished, but the song survived.

Most of the lyrics were written by Shelly using a few fragments that I gave her to start with. I think the only instructions were that she had to keep the title line in the chorus and the bridge had to start with the "Or you will find yourself in someone else's hell" line. Oh, and she had less than one week in which to do it in. I think she did a bang up job. Bob Breen got a lyric writing credit for insisting that I keep the "What's your point? I don't know" line that I had adlibbed while playing an early version for him and Sarah.

The original demo of this song had a really great quality to it but much of it was lost when a hard drive crashed. So, I had to start pretty much from scratch (only the bass line remains from the demo). Joe Ongie pushed me to come up with something to bring in after the 1st chorus to keep things moving. I came up with the simple 12 string part that I doubled on octave higher. Joe pointed out that it would be more accurately described as a "24 string" part. Whatever.

Oh, and check out Joe on the Glockenspiel during the guitar solo. Actually, it's a MIDI keyboard playing a Glockenspiel patch, but it's still very cool.
