JOHN HOSKINSON "MISCELLANEOUS HEATHEN"
It’s been 11 years since his first appearance on CD in the line-up of the Ferocious Daisies (LP - Blue Hair City) time enough to bring maturity to his composing and lyric writing. His personal journey makes a stop here, with Miscellaneous Heathen bringing 11 power pop pieces to his audience, with a variety of eras coming together in the guitar styles, anything from the Byrds to Crowded House and the Gin Blossoms. Hoskinson tries to crystallise his own sound, walking in the steps of Pete Yorn, presenting pieces with the emotional naiveté of a songwriter who does not avoid drama but manages to get to the point anyway using his ample abilities as a songsmith. Especially in the 2 songs, "I Hope I Die Before You Do" and "She Still Plays Around", where he works with the multi talented Eugene Edwards. Those, along with "I Belong To You" and "It’s Not My Place" make his first solo outing a great record and a preview of even greater things to come.
