Miscellaneous Info
My wife, Shelly Frasier, wrote most of the lyrics for this tune. In fact, this
song wouldn't exist without her. I was playing the chorus chords one day over and over
because I thought it had some potential for a song. After this continued for a while
with absolutely no melodic sparks, I kind of gave up and put the guitar down. Shelly
walked in from the other room and said, "Hey, what was that? I really like that one." So,
it got a pardon and was allowed to live another day.
I eventually came up with the opening chorus and the first line of the first verse. Both
were heavily inspired by my wife. As anyone who knows Shelly can attest, "creepy" is one of
her favorite words and it is often used to describe my behavior. This behavior has influenced
her in dark, disturbing ways which has caused her to say many times that I can't ever leave
her because I've made her unfit for other people.
So, I gave her a demo with those opening lines and a lot of "la-las" over the rest of the melody
and she very quickly finished the song up for me. I especially like the "when you're near
a window I've an urge to push you through" line.
As for the recording, it started out quite easy and breezy and became a real
challenge. I recorded the guitar and my lead vocal live in Joe's bedroom and then he
handed me a little square, plastic microphone that sounded like crap and I double-tracked
the lead vocal to give it that distorted, old-timey sound. I then went home and added
some harmonies. Joe pushed me to put some more on and I did. He pushed again and, again
I layered some more on there. There was a lot of time spent in my dining room running
between the computer (to push record), the piano (to work out parts) and my vocal mic.
