JOHN HOSKINSON
Pancho Fantastico

Tallboy Records

Hoskinson is a criminally undiscovered pop treasure, a master tunesmith with, it seems, a frequently broken heart and a knack for writing about it in a humorous fashion with no self-pity (the latter quality being rare indeed these days--ed.). His second album is a second home run, and features some able backing from fellow popsmiths like Eugene Edwards, Robbie Rist and Joe Ongie. Dating creepy girlfriends, waking up a girlfriend when drunk only to have her break up with you, finally going out with the gorgeous girl down the hall and discovering there's nothing upstairs... well, you get the picture. Heartbreak has rarely been this much fun since the first Elvis Costello album, although sonically this has more in common with Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut. Highly recommended.
