No genre wears its influences as shamelessly on its
sleeve as power-pop. So when Edwards kicks off the
second song of his debut album with a sly lyrical nod
to Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives," there's
no need to wince. Anyway, aside from an awesome
rave-up ("At Your Place") that features a fleet
fingered bass line worth of Bruce Thomas, there's
little here that resembles Elvis's golden years.
Edwards is more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy,
with chugging guitars that recall The Smithereens and
a vocal presence that brings to mind The Gin Blossoms.
Other reference points might include Material Issue
and Marshall Crenshaw. Edwards is a competent singer
and everyone plays with vigor. There's nothing earth
shattering here, just some sturdy, well crafted tunes.
