EUGENE EDWARDS
My Favorite Revolution (Flagship)
Eugene Edwards, an L.A.-based singer/guitarist who used to play with rockabilly cat Russell Scott, is a regular on the local club scene and a fixture at the International Pop Overthrow festival. The buzz on his effervescent brand of power pop is bound to intensify since his debut disc My Favorite Revolution has finally secured national distribution. This thoroughly engaging effort is chock full of shrewd lyrics, indelible Elvis Costello-meets-Squeeze melodies (always reliable John Hoskinson helps out on harmonies) and driving guitars. Edwards ably handled all instruments except drums. Standouts include the frenetic barnburner “At Your Place,” the British Invasion shadings in “Congratulations, My Darling” and the blazing title track. The best indie release I’ve heard all year.
