What Squeeze was to the '80s, Eugene Edwards could be to this decade. Staccato pop never sounded so good. "Your Own Nightmare," with its Strokes-ian drum beat, pulls the melodic hooks of Matthew Sweet, the harmonies of Fountains of Wayne and the skewed pop sensibilities of the Posies. Although highly derivative ("It Doesn't Get Better Than This" is straight-up Elvis Costello; "All About You" is equal parts Spell and Merchants of Venice; "Telling That Lie Again" has an Americana feel almost straight out of The Jayhawks songbook), Edwards has a certain distinct quality that doesn't make you feel like he's a glorified karaoke singer.
