Without getting into the politics of playing certain clubs, I jumped at the ironic chance to play the Echo even though it was slightly last minute. It was the Eugene Edwards Band's first time playing there. I only found out about the opening when I was checking my MySpace inbox for the first time in two months. Note to everyone: I don't check that box. I am not a sixteen year-old girl. I am a married man with a band. Thank you. The really funny thing is that I got the chance to play it because the Cousin Lovers passed. I haven’t seen or spoken to Dean in years, but in this small world blessings can come from old friends regardless of whether they know it or not.
A few weeks have passed since this gig and I know that we veered a little from the set list. We did Davey Meshell’s “Going Back to Drinking” with Brian singing lead. This gave us a chance to bring Joey Galvan up onstage to play maracas. We all hope Joey’s surgery heals and that he’s playing drums soon.
Now here’s a funny thing. We did this show as a trio (John had tickets to see the Crowded House reunion gig) and I had to pay some attention to that as I wrote the set list. Some of the newer songs don’t apply to a trio (Lo & Behold, Shake and Shiver) as well as older ones (Victim at Bedtime, Shattered Flower) but that doesn’t mean you shy away from them. You just work harder or pretend that you’ve never heard the songs any other way. The thing I like is all the musicians that come up, and our bros from 50 Cent Haircut were no different, and tell you how much they love the trio format but are not in trios themselves! I for one vow to only use the trio when I have to.
